The agreement between Boca Juniors and Miguel Angel Russo, who would close his stage at San Lorenzo to start a third one with the ‘Xeneize’ in view of the Club World Cup, is very close.
Argentinian Boca Juniors is finalizing details for Miguel Angel Russo, current coach of San Lorenzo, to become its new coach, with an eye on the next Club World Cup, sources from both clubs informed ‘EFE’.
Russo has been chosen by the president of Boca Juniors, Juan Roman Riquelme, and the club informed that it is his intention to take the reins of the team this week.
On the other hand, sources from the ‘Ciclón’ anticipated that the coach will appear on Tuesday at the club’s premises to say goodbye to the squad and close the details of his departure.
The 69-year-old Russo will thus close his second stint at San Lorenzo a little more than seven months after taking over the position and hours after his elimination last Sunday from the Apertura tournament of Argentine football, after losing in the semifinal against Platense.
The run-up to the match was strongly affected by the growing rumors about Russo’s imminent departure, which has not yet been made official by either club.
After names were tossed around since the dismissal of Fernando Gago from the blue and gold bench almost a month ago, during which Mariano Herron took over as interim coach, Boca finally opted for an experienced coach who has already had two spells at the institution.
His first stage at the club was between 2006 and 2008 and was marked by the 2007 Copa Libertadores crown, the last one achieved by the ‘Xeneize’. The star of that team was, precisely, Juan Roman Riquelme, with whom Russo established a close relationship.
His second stint at La Boca was between 2020 and 2021, and also left good memories in the fans: they were crowned champions of the 2019-2020 Superliga, reached the semifinals of the Libertadores and were crowned in the Professional League Cup in 2020.
That period, in which he also coincided with Riquelme – no longer as a player but as vice-president of the club – ended in August 2021 after a negative streak of matches without a win.
